East Africa, Kenya / Tanzania, Luo culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This hardwood stool, known as a kom nyalwo, features a deeply concave circular seat resting on four knobbed legs. Carved from a single piece of wood, this simple yet powerful object symbolizes a man's authority within his household and society. In Luo culture, the kom nyaluo was exclusively used by the male head of the household. Upon the man's death, a ceremonial enthronement of the new husband would take place with the stool, reaffirming his position in the family. Size: 12" Diameter x 12" H (30.5 cm x 30.5 cm).

  • Condition: Old repairs to the seat using iron wires to reinforce pressure fissures in three areas. Some cracks are infilled with a straw / mud mixture. Old chips and abrasions. Lustrous patina from age and use.
