Description:

Katsuyuki Nishijima (Japanese, b. 1945), limited edition woodblock print, Japanese title handwritten in pencil at lower margin translates to Gion Juunidanya (or Junnidanya in Gion), numbered 21 of 500, hand signed in lower right margin by the artist with red seal, undated as are all Nishijima's woodblock prints, certainly Contemporary. Katsuyuki Nishijima is a popular Japanese artist, born in Yamaguchi Province, who has been enamored with Ukiyoe woodblock prints since childhood. He studied the art of woodblock printmaking in the studio of the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto and has exhibited his work with the Kyoto independent artists group shows and in solo exhibitions. He is among the few contemporary Japanese artists using the same technique that originated more than 300 years ago. Interestingly, Nishimima does not include human figures in his compositions; instead, he focuses on the architectural and natural settings of Japan. Since 1972, he has created limited edition woodblocks that feature old buildings and landmarks as his primary subject matter. The title, handwritten in pencil at the center of the lower margin, roughly translates to Gion Juunidanya (or Junnidanya in Gion), a very well known Shabu Shabu restaurant in Gion, Kyoto. Shabu-shabu (?????? , sometimes spelled syabu-syabu) is a Japanese nabemono hotpot dish comprised of thinly sliced meats and vegetables boiled in water. Note the onomatopoeia of the term; this is derived from the wonderful sounds created when the delicious ingredients are stirred in the cooking pot. Eating shabu-shabu is an experience, as the food is cooked one piece at a time by the diner at the table. A superb limited edition woodblock print of this Kyoto eatery, replete with all the hallmarks of ukiyo-e style and technique. Double-matted and mounted in a gilded wood frame under glass. Size: 13" W x 17.5" H (33 cm x 44.4 cm); 17.875" W x 23.125" H (45.4 cm x 58.7 cm) with frame
