Description:

Western Europe, Germany, Eichstatt, Solnhofen (Altmuhltal) Formation, Jurassic Period, ca. 154 to 144 million years ago. A fossilized prehistoric lobster relative of the Mecochirus genus, within a limestone matrix. There is great articulation, and the body is slightly raised above the surrounding surface. This crustacean had unusually long front legs but certainly resembles a miniature modern-day lobster! It is thought Mecochirus used its legs to create burrows which have been captured in trace fossils known as Thalassinoides. Light touchups with pigments to the fine antennae, and limbs, help envision this crustacean scuttling or burrowing into the sea floor. Size of matrix: 11" L x 10.8" W (27.9 cm x 27.4 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand; shrimp: 5.3" L x 1.5" W (13.5 cm x 3.8 cm)
