Description:

Jose de Jesus Cervantes (Mexican-American, XX). Abstract mixed media painting, 1993. Signed and dated at lower right. An abstract painting by Chicano Artist Jose de Jesus Cervantes that draws upon his early Modernist influences. In this painting, Jose de Jesus Cervantes transforms human faces into mysterious somewhat robotic visages emerging from an extraordinary mazelike composition rendered in vibrant color as well as dramatic black and white - all conjuring Fernand Leger's take on Cubism. Interestingly, this piece was painted decades after the artist's most active period in the Chicano Art Movement and revisits his early training in Modernism. A wonderful piece mounted in an attractive custom frame. Size (sight view): 21.25" L x 15.25" W (54 cm x 38.7 cm) Size (frame): 29.75" L x 23.75" W (75.6 cm x 60.3 cm)

About the Artist: Jose De Jesus Cervantes was an artist of the Chicano Art Movement during the 1960s and 70s. He studied at the prestigious Chouinard Institute (now CalArts) in Los Angeles, California where he honed an abstract aesthetic. According to Sony Fe, an artist affiliated with the Chicano Art Movement, "Among the poets, intellectuals, writers, musicians, dreamers, and painters, at Chouinard, Cervantes was being groomed and dressed to become an abstract artist. He lived within a talented circle of artists that rivaled the masters from Europe and Mexico." However, at this time, he also met Victor Franco who was establishing cultural arts center in East Los Angeles with Chouinard artist Leonardo Castellanos as its director. Cervantes became their artist in residence and thus began his entre to the Chicano Art Movement.
