Description:

Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). Watercolor, n.d. Hand signed and dated in pencil at upper right. A mesmerizing watercolor by Jon Zahourek depicting a beautiful reclining woman in the nude save her colorful turban and hoop earring. A vision in purple, she rests with both arms folded behind her head which is propped up on a royal blue pillow, our view of her body ending at her thighs. A masterful colorist, Zahourek contrasts the plums and violets of her body with the vibrant sunflower, tangerine, citron, and watermelon hues of her checkered turban. Furthermore, Zahourek's passion for anatomy and his artistic process is strongly conveyed in this scintillating vision. Zahourek himself has described his creative method as somewhat organic and dissociative. In his words, "Paintings and drawings and sculpture were all a surprise. The kinesthetic mind was doing the artwork, not the conscious mind." Size: 23" L x 31.5" W (58.4 cm x 80 cm) Size of frame: 32.25" L x 41.125" W (81.9 cm x 104.5 cm)

In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
