John Cody (American, b. 1948). Figural serpentine stone sculpture, 1978. Signed "Cody HT 78 15 BM" on base. A hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture depicting a tranquil sleeping woman or child by American artist John Cody. This striking composition was skillfully carved from a single block of beautiful serpentine stone, replete with soft sage green hues and dramatic veining in contrasting shades of jade and cream. Cody rendered the figure in a fetal position - head resting upon folded arms with legs beneath - with voluminous forms and marvelous textures further imbuing the figure with naturalism. Note how the silky smooth polished body conveys the suppleness of flesh as opposed to the rough-hewn texture of that wavy hair. What's more the figure's face with a gentle tongue thrust captures a moment of utter relaxation and delightful slumber. Hand signed "CODY HT 78 15 BM" by Cody on the base, this mesmerizing, one-of-a-kind treasure is destined to be a standout in any fine art collection. Size: 17" L x 12" W x 13" H (43.2 cm x 30.5 cm x 33 cm)
