Description:

Native American, northern Arizona (Hopi region), Jeddito Black-on-Yellow (sometimes Black-on-White), ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A steep-walled ceramic bowl, with a fascinating decoration painted with sure black strokes against a creamy yellow orange background. The interior of the vessel depicts a sacred sipapu, the Hopi word for an opening or indentation in the floor of a kiva. The curved walls of the kiva and the sacred passageways inside of it also depicted here. The exterior features a zoomorphic motif on one side, also in black. This bowl was made by a woman, mostly likely on Antelope Mesa and Third Mesa in Hopi land. Size: 8.7" W x 3.55" H (22.1 cm x 9 cm)
