East Asia, Japan, Showa period, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A collection of Japanese items including an Urasaki ceramic figure as well as a set of lacquered plastic teacups and saucers, all contained in a painted wood and iron tea chest. Hakata Urasaki dolls are colorful ceramic figurines that depict everyday life of Japanese people and are popular collectables that were usually sold to U. S. military personnel only - this seated fishmonger has a separate fish upon a tray, displayed upon a bamboo woven and lacquered wood stand. The lightweight tea set consists of 8 cups and 7 plates, each lacquered in red then overpainted with golden yellow pigment and with a black monogram on the side. The chest is covered with paper overlays painted with peonies, women in kimonos, and a samurai; the lid contains a brass lock plate and opens on hinges. Size (box): 17" L x 10" W x 11" H (43.2 cm x 25.4 cm x 27.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Loss to paper on tea chest, losses and fading to painted pigments. Stable pressure fissures in wood. Losses to interior wood slats. Hinges are delicate. Ceramic figure is intact and very good. Fish is loose from table. Abrasions and chipping to golden lacquer on tea set.
