Description:

East Asia, Japan, Muromachi Period, ca. 1392 to 1573 CE. A tall stoneware vessel, known as Iga ware, glazed with a mottled green and orange glaze. This vessel rests on a flat foot with tall walls that rise upward to a small shoulder and a narrow opening that leads into the deep cavity. An undulating incised line encircles the bottom of the body, and the green glaze runs down the sides as if too much was applied to the top and it started to drip. The uneven surface glaze, rough texture, and plain shape of this vessel was intentional! A rustic and simplistic aesthetic was highly desired in Iga ware, and when shaping pieces, potters kept and even added pebbles in the clay for texture and style. This vessel embodies the ancient Japanese "wabi-sabi" concept that appreciates irregularity of form that is characteristic of Iga ware. Size: 9.07" W x 11" H (23 cm x 27.9 cm)
