Description:

East Asia, Japan, Momoyama period, ca. 1568 to 1600 CE. A wonderful example of samurai chest armor (dou) formed from hammered iron plates (tsurubashiri) covered in dark-brown lacquer. The shoulder straps are held on with blue-dyed textile straps and have padded panels beneath, and the rounded profile and open arm holes enable both increased protection and versatility of movement. Six sections of karuto or kozan-do (card-like or plated) leg panels (kusazuri) made from lacquered wood hang from the larger chest and back plates via dozens of similar textile straps as on the shoulders and provide protection to the thigs of the samurai. A wonderful example of functional yet stylish armor from Japan! Size: 14.5" W x 27" H (36.8 cm x 68.6 cm); 34.25" H (87 cm) on included custom stand.
