Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand made wooden bucket with a single handle and cylindrical body. The body is formed by dozens of vertical slats with resin or pitch to make watertight. Interestingly, the pieces are held together with "invisible" bamboo nails fitted into joints that create a nearly perfectly flush construction. This vessel was for drawing water and was proved for its simplicity and skilled craftsmanship. Size: 7.25" Diameter x 14.75" H (18.4 cm x 37.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
