Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An evocative wooden Noh Theatre mask, hand carved in the "otoko" or man type depicting Chohan Kumasaka, a famous thief of the Heian era. Also referred to as Choreibeshimi, the bearded vizard presents huge, bulging eyes that portray a strong sense of caution, as well as a giant, powerful nose and mouth to give the impression the this is the leader of a band of robbers. Oddly, however, his exaggerated features also project an air of foolishness, evoking pity on the character. The outstanding characteristic of the mask is the fin-like hanging flesh between the eyes. Size: 5.4" W x 7.5" H (13.7 cm x 19 cm)
