East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. mid 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful lacquered wood inro and ivory and bronze netsuke. A thin, braided rope has been threaded through the sides of the inro and around its body, attaching the netsuke. Size: 2.7" W x 2.3" H (6.9 cm x 5.8 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Cord attached to netsuke is torn. Inro has rich patina on its surface, as does the netsuke. Small encrusted deposit on the upper part of one side of the inro. The back of the netsuke is cracked, but does not seem in danger of breaking fully.
