Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Tiasho Period, ca. 1868 to 1926 CE. A dramatic, hollow-cast bronze censer depicting an eagle attacking a rabbit - presenting the fierce spirit of eagles hunting prey, quite fascinating because it was created during a period when Japan was beginning to westernize and exert its presence as an international power. Beyond their regal symbolism, eagles signified bold, definitive action which was oftentimes taken during this turbulent era. Departing from relatively peaceful depictions of nature, this sculptor emphasized the extreme bravado of his subject. A section of feathers on this eagle's back was cast separately and is hinged to the back to serve the piece's function as a censor. A wonderful piece, replete with fine artistry, impressive casting and modeling techniques, and rich symbolism. Size: 6.5" W x 11.25" H (16.5 cm x 28.6 cm)

The piece brings to mind ink drawings by Meiji period artist Kawanabe Kyosai (Japanese, 1831–1889) who also favored imagery of eagles pursuing and hunting rabbits as well as other animals such as monkeys and even lions.
