Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A cast leaded pewter relief plaque fragment featuring an eagle perched on a blossoming branch, likely from a flowering plum tree (ume). The eagle, with its wings raised, seems ready to take flight, symbolizing power and vigilance. This fragment may have once adorned the lid of a jewelry box or served as a decorative tabletop plaque. Pewter, favored during the Meiji period for its detailed casting ability, was widely used as artisans embraced both traditional Japanese motifs and Western techniques. The juxtaposition of the eagle’s strength with the fragile beauty of plum blossoms reflects themes of resilience and impermanence. Such symbolism was commonly explored in Japanese art of the Meiji era. Size: 4.3" L x 4.5" W (10.9 cm x 11.4 cm)
