Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. late 19th century CE. An attractive ensemble of four mold-cast copper ornamental appliques known as menuki meant to adorn the sword hilt beneath the traditional cotton wrappings. First are two dragons, one with its head toward the center of its coiled body, and the other with its head projecting to the right. Next is a left-facing demon archer with a lengthy bow laid in front of the gilded body. Fourth is a Japanese maple leaf surrounded by stippling and red pigment. Size of largest (dragon w/ centered head): 1.5" L x 0.55" W (3.8 cm x 1.4 cm)
