Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely pair of woven bamboo baskets used as Ikebana vases. The smoked bamboo strips are both narrow and broadly split then woven with an open, vertical plaiting and a twist, wrap handle. A copper insert is included with one basket for holding water when the basket was used for floral arrangement. Ikebana ('living flowers') is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, also known as Kado ('the way of flowers'). Japanese artisans crafted beautiful baskets like these as containers for both simple and elaborate ikebana arrangements. Size of narrow basket: 9" Diameter x 17.5" H (22.9 cm x 44.4 cm); broad basket: 10" Diameter x 16" H (25.4 cm x 40.6 cm)

  • Condition: Some wear and abrasions to bamboo strips, but both are intact and excellent with nice patina. A copper cup insert is included, it is probably not original to the baskets, but could be used with either basket for floral arrangements.

Shipping costs will be added to your invoice at auction's end based on information given when you registered to bid - we strive to offer the most economical shipping costs to ensure safe transit. Our shippers of choice are DHL for International shipments and UPS for domestic shipments, but we are able to ship via other carriers at the buyer's expense as deemed necessary or by request.

For shipments of oversize items, Artemis Gallery will assist the buyer in working with a third-party shipping provider. For shipments outside of the USA, customs and duties may apply upon entry into said country, and this fee, if any, is the buyer's responsibility.
