Description:

East Asia, Japan, ca. mid-20th to 21st century CE. An okimono statue intricately carved from a piece of fossilized mammoth ivory, possibly depicting a Sennin, a revered immortal figure in Japanese folklore. The seated elderly man holds a bird in his hand, symbolizing wisdom or longevity. The surface is delicately incised with linear patterns filled with black ink, enhancing the figure's serene and mystical presence. Size: 3" L x 2" W x 4" H (7.6 cm x 5.1 cm x 10.2 cm)

Schreger lines are intersecting patterns visible in cross-sections of ivory, formed by structural growth patterns unique to proboscideans. In elephant ivory, the Schreger lines intersect at angles greater than 90 degrees, while in mammoth ivory, the angles are less than 90 degrees - as seen in this piece. These patterns are a key diagnostic tool in distinguishing between elephant and mammoth ivory.
