East Asia, Japan, late Meiji period, ca. 1895 to 1912. A black lacquer hokai box of a ribbed cylindrical form with engraved brass appliques adorning the lid as well as the four elegant outswept legs/feet. Traditionally, Hokai boxes were used to store shells for a game called Kaiawase; however, they were also used as containers to store dry food. A wonderful example that epitomizes the grace and technique of Japanese aesthetic and design. Size: 18" L x 18" W x 16.625" H (45.7 cm x 45.7 cm x 42.2 cm)

  • Condition: Surface wear to lid with scuffs and some losses to lacquer finish. Brass appliques on lid and body present with nice detailing and a warm patina. One of the brass appliques at the upper end of one of the legs is missing one of its nails; however, all the others are secure. One applique on lid is missing one of its nails, but the others are holding it securely to the lid. Container has chips to peripheries as well as some losses and age cracks to lacquer finish. Lid fits container nicely.
