East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty to early Republic era, ca. mid-19th century CE; Japan, Meiji to Showa era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. Two colorful enamel and gilt porcelain dishes: a Chinese famille rose dish and a Japanese butterfly Kutani dish. The butterfly Kutani dish features a gilt rim with 68% gold purity and a unique peachy beige ground, over which vibrant butterflies appear to flutter. Kutani porcelain, often grouped with Arita or Imari wares, is known for its bright colors meant to provide cheer during the winter months, while its scenes reflect an idealized version of life and nature. The famille rose plate showcases a gilt rim with 4% to 9% gold purity, a vibrant register of floral motifs, and a central array of overlapping fans, each adorned with different patterns.     Condition:
  • Not recommended for use with food due to high levels of lead. Scratches to the beige surface and losses to pigments on the butterfly dish. Chip to underside of rim, which does not affect the painted surface. Fading and scratches to pigments on the fan plate, and small chip to underside of rim.
