Description:

East Asia, Japan, Eiroku to early Edo period, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. This finely crafted wakizashi is housed in koshirae - ornate mountings- featuring tight fittings that appear native to the blade and a lacquered saya (sheath). The steel blade curves gracefully, meeting a habaki (neck collar) made from copper and adorned with a 68% silver panel stamped with floral motifs. The fuchi (spacer) is crafted from copper, while the handle is wrapped with stingray skin (samegawa) and cord. Modern brass menuki are tied to the surface for added ornamentation. The signature on the tang reads "Akasaka ju Kaneiwa," translating to "Kaneiwa of Akasaka." The Kaneiwa name is associated with the Mino province, a region celebrated for its Seki School influence. Stylistic and historical analysis suggests this blade was likely crafted during the Eiroku Period (1558-1570) or the early years of the Edo Period. Size in saya sheath: 31.25" L x 1.5" W (79.4 cm x 3.8 cm); blade: 21" L x 1" W (53.3 cm x 2.5 cm)
