Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A wonderfully preserved example of a signal fan, made using carved and lacquered bamboo as well as lacquered paper. Open the fan to reveal its dramatic surface - a red rising sun against a black background. Samurai in the Edo period used fans such as this one to signal to others on the battlefield; other fans, made of metal, served as actual weapons. This example is nicely displayed in a glass-fronted shadow box. Size: 12.75" H (32.4 cm); box is: 24.5" W x 18.75" H (62.2 cm x 47.6 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in March 2006; ex-private Kurakuen, Japan collection
