Description:

Japan, ca. 1615-1868 CE. An essential tool for any literate Japanese of the Edo period, the inkstone was used for the grinding and containment of ink. This example is particularly interesting, with the bottom of the stone left with its natural shape and roughness, and only the top smoothed and carved out for use as an inkstone. The lid is beautifully carved to depict a man with chubby cheeks, a wide grin, moustache, and pointed hat. A charming piece! 6" x 5" x 1" Provenance: Ex-private M.
