East Asia, Japan, late Edo to Meiji period, ca. 1850 to 1910 CE. A hand-carved and very nicely painted/lacquered wooden zoomorphic mask with an articulated mouth presenting a dramatic countenance comprised of bulging eyes with curved, protruding brows above, a prominent nose with flaring nostrils, separately carved ears, and a wide, toothy grin; the mouth opens to reveal a carved tongue as well. A few wisps of natural fiber hair adorn the figure's head and upper lip, and incised whiskers embellish the upper lip. The upper and lower sections are skillfully joined via hand-carved wooden dowels. Homemade metal pins and plates were used in very old repairs to hold the lower two-part jaw and a section of the upper jaw together. The artist's signature is stamped inside - on the roof of the figure's mouth. A special example, very early, with impressive artistry, technique, and a thick coating of beautiful lacquer of rich chocolate brown, wine red, and black hues that has developed a lovely patina. - Condition: Very old repairs to upper and lower jaws with homemade metal pins and plates. Some age cracks and surface wear commensurate with age. Losses to 'hair' fibers, but some still remain. Overall a very early example with gorgeous, lustrous patina.
