Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A nicely preserved lacquered woven reed example of a yoroi bitsu (also yoroi hitsu), a box specially made to hold a samurai's armor. The reed makes the box incredibly light and easy to carry. Iron components - handles and a latch - allow it to close. The interior is lined with newspaper, probably from a later date than when the box was originally made. Size: 16.5" L x 16.5" W x 22" H (41.9 cm x 41.9 cm x 55.9 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in July 2007; ex-private Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan collection
