Description:

East Asia, Japan, later Edo Period, ca. first half of the 19th century CE. A circular bullseye-style wooden target used as a petite target for skilled archers. Rings of red and black lacquer accentuate the target and increase the visibility for the archer, and the center is adorned with a thin layer of gilt lacquer. A thin string is attached to two large top rings. Yabusame is a traditional form of mounted archery where horse-riding archers ride down a designated lane while attempting to hit three targets like this example in succession with 'turnip-headed' arrows. Size: 6.5" W x 6.4" H (16.5 cm x 16.3 cm)
