Description:

East Asia, Japan, later Edo period, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A fine pair of shoes known as waraji with woven fiber soles meant to cushion the feet of the wearer. Traditional waraji have open-toed designs with fibrous straps running across the top, though these have dark blue cotton threads that form an enclosing upper body and ankle support. The design of these shoes suggests they were used for combat training where the warrior's ankles were stabilized for better balance rather than being exposed to blows. Size of each shoe: 9.9" L x 4.3" W x 7.125" H (25.1 cm x 10.9 cm x 18.1 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA; ex-private Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan collection
