Description:

James G. Davis (American, 1931-2016). "The Last Neanderthal" mixed media (printed image, colored pencil, glitter, fabric, decorative paper, and hair) 1999. Title, "P.P." (printer's proof), artist's signature, and date handwritten in pencil below the image. A captivating mixed media work that features two figures seated at a counter, the primary figure wearing a bright patterned shirt and holding a cheeseburger, the second figure, perhaps his shadow, highlighted in red behind. To the left is a standing figure wearing long black trench coat who is painting images of mammoths and a jaguar on a wall, suggesting that he is "The Last Neanderthal" referred to in the title and is creating an impressive cave painting. A striking piece by Davis who is known for figurative pieces that explore mythological and historical references as well as gender and social status issues that often have a metaphorical twist. Size (image): 16" L x 20" W (40.6 cm x 50.8 cm) Size (sheet): 18.75" L x 22" W (47.6 cm x 55.9 cm)
