Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoque (Jama Coaque), ca. 0 to 500 CE. This figure shows a mother holding her child, seated in what appears to be a wicker chair and flanked by two birds. The details of both the woman and baby's clothing and personal adornments are clear, including the mother's elaborate headdress and enormous earrings. The finery on the baby demonstrates how important children were in the society. The blue details on this figure are a fairly unique feature in New World pottery -- although the Jamacoque employed it, very little New World pottery you see will have been made with blue coloration, and even fewer pieces will have it so clearly remaining. Size: 6-1/2"W x 5-1/2"H.
