Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque), ca. 500 CE. An expressive example of an important female elder, sitting with her hands upon the knees of her outstretched legs. The sculptor has indicated this lady's advanced age via the many incised wrinkles on her face as well as her pendulous breasts. Her elite status is quite clear, given how highly decorated she is - wearing a headdress, large, hooped ear ornaments, a grand 'beaded' pectoral, a nose ring, and bracelets - all embellished with beautiful aqua blue pigment. Notice the additional applied yellow pigment on her person as well. A very special example from the Jamacoaque of ancient Ecuador. Size: 4" W x 4.625" H (10.2 cm x 11.7 cm)

- Condition: Small losses and pressure fissure to back of headband. Expected surface wear with some fading to pigmentation, still much blue and yellow applied pigments remain. A few surface indentations to back side probably made with tools when the piece was created. Scattered mineral deposits particularly on the verso.
