Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manab? Province, Jama Coaque culture, ca 500 AD. The Jama Coaque culture of the Pacific coast of Ecuador is known for its pottery, especially mold-made figural statues adorned with appliqu?s and painted with pigment. The artist of this piece ornamented the body with a grand headdress, wrist cuffs, and ear ornaments. The Jama-Coaque trace their heritage to the Chorrera people; however, several iconographic and stylistic features indicate that the Jama-Coaque were also influenced by Mesoamerican traditions. Note the tube-like limbs and exaggerated hands for example both of which were favored by the indigenous artisans West Mexico. This figure sits with folded legs, his hands resting on the upper leg. This position suggests that he is praying, chanting, or engaged in a trancelike state. Note his intense, focused expression and open mouth as if singing his prayer. 4.00"L x 7.38"W x 4.75"H (10.16 L x 18.73 W x 12.07 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
