Lot 277
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A small pottery figure that acts as a functional whistle, in the form of a standing person with a diamond-shaped headdress who holds two implements that unfortunately are not entirely clear - one may be a pipe? - while wearing elaborate leggings with a geometric pattern. The eyes of the figure are wide, perhaps indicating that they are under the influence of drugs ingested ritually. This may be a shaman figure, common in Jamacoaque art. Size: 2.4" W x 3.6" H (6.1 cm x 9.1 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Berman collection acquired before 1975
