**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (also Jama Coaque), ca. 500 CE. A hand-built pottery figure that stands atop gently arched feet and delineated legs. Several narrow incisions denote the fingers that are integral with the hips, and perky breasts protrude in front of sloped shoulders. Coffee-bean-shaped eyes are set beneath high-arching brows and a pinched coiffure, and remains of red and orange-red pigment are visible across all features. Size: 2.625" W x 6.2" H (6.7 cm x 15.7 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

  • Condition: Left leg reattached to body, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Abrasions and encrustations to limbs, body, and head, with fading to original pigment, and minor softening to some facial details. Light remains of original pigment and nice earthen deposits throughout.
