Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque or Jama-Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A fine pair of hand-built pottery female figures standing atop attenuated legs and holding both arms to their sides. The first figure has a distended abdomen, wrist bangles, a large necklace, discoid earrings, and a trapezoidal headdress beneath her staring countenance. The taller figure showcases a minimalist form with perky breasts, a thigh-length skirt, and almond-shaped eyes within puffy lids. Remains of red-orange pigment are visible around her feet, waist, and shoulders. Size of largest: 2.6" W x 5.1" H (6.6 cm x 13 cm); 5.6" H (14.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Taller figure has repair to right foot, with resurfacing and light overpainting along break lines; shorter figure is intact and very good. Both figures have minor nicks and abrasions with fading to pigment. Nice preservation to figural details.
