Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. An intriguing depiction of an emaciated figure seated upon crossed legs, hollow and hand-built from pottery. Bony shoulders trace downwards to arms clasped over the skeletal chest, and the slightly-rounded belly suggests that gas has begun to accumulate as a result of malnourishment. The gaunt countenance is composed of recessed eyes above rounded cheeks, a jutting chin, and a prominent nose, all beneath an enlarged head with a central spout hole. Traces of original orange pigmentation are visible on the head, face, and body and indicate this figure was adorned in dense pigmentation at one time. Size: 4.625" W x 7.9" H (11.7 cm x 20.1 cm).
