Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A wonderful pottery vessel in the form of a nude hunchback, seated with hand on knees flanking his prominent phallus. The evocative male figure leans forward exhibiting a huge head incised with crow's feet and forehead folds that accentuate his age, while a prominent curved spine protrudes from his hunched back. Though mostly bare, he boasts lavish adornments such as a nasal ornament, a labret, a long necklace, and bracelets. The Jamacoaque are well known for their mold-made pottery portraits of individuals, although this one seems to have taken a fantastical, transformative style. Size: 5.9" W x 7.5" H (15 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995
