Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful bi-chrome terracotta vessel of a mesmerizing form comprised of a crouching figure supporting a large, shallow dish on his back. Hands on both knees, the figure lunges his head forward, his eyes bulging and mouth partially open as though wincing beneath the weight. In the Pre-Columbian world, hunchbacks' physiognomic deformities were interpreted as signs that these individuals were especially chosen by the deities and possessed supernatural abilities. Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
