Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, San Sebastian style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely example of a San Sebastian ceramic female figure. Seated with both legs extending outwards, her arms raised, and perky breasts and sloping shoulders completing her form. She is nude aside from dangling earrings and a headdress that encircles the top of her elongated skull. The black and red patterns painted on her body presumably refer to tattoos or scarification. She has a prominent nose, narrow, incised eyes, and a thin mouth. This figure would have been placed into a shaft tomb; figurines that faced outward around the perimeter of graves inside of shaft tombs are a hallmark of the elusive early West Mexican cultures in Jalisco and neighboring Nayarit and Colima. Size: 8.55" W x 12.2" H (21.7 cm x 31 cm)
