Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, San Juanito, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A seated female figure holding a child who clutches her breast as if nursing, nude except for a headband, long feather-like earrings, applied double armbands, and a plethora of black abstract geometric tattoos meticulously delineated against a red ground. Particularly inspiring are the repeated chevron tattoos adorning her legs! Figures of this type with an elongated somewhat tubular head and slit eyes have been attributed to cemeteries in the region of San Juanito, municipio of Antonio Escobedo, approximately fifty miles west of Guadalajara (Jose Parres Arias, "Nuevas adquisiciones del Museo de Arqueologia." Eco 12, 1962.) A fabulous example from the ancients of Jalisco! Size: 6.5" W x 9.875" H (16.5 cm x 25.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Southern California, USA private collection; acquired between 1969-1985
