Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built redware pottery seated figure, nude save his mushroom-shaped headdress and elaborate ear ornaments. He sits with one arm to his hip and the other to his mouth as he looks ahead with those coffee bean shaped eyes flanking his protruding nose upon a characteristically elongated head. When viewed from the side, a disfigured back suggests that he is a hunchback. In the Pre-Columbian world, hunchbacks were regarded as important figures, their deformities interpreted as signs that these people were among the chosen few who were touched by the deities and could communicate with the celestial and ancestral realm. As a consequence they were oftentimes regarded as powerful, shamanic figures. A dramatic and meaningful example from this shaft-tomb culture of West Mexico in marvelous condition. Size: 6" W x 9.5" H (15.2 cm x 24.1 cm)
