Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel of a wide, carinated form with a concave base, a gently sloped shoulder with dark linear motifs, and a tall spout. The top of the vessel features an abstract anthropomorphic effigy with a pair of bent arms on either side of the head that doubles as the 'spout.' The expressive countenance bears impressed ovoid eyes, an aquiline nose adorned with a thick ring, thin lips, and cupped ears bedecked with elaborate ornamentation, all beneath a tall forehead surmounted with an incised coiffure. Red and brown slip adorn the surfaces of this intriguing example of ancient West Mexican pottery. Size: 8" W x 7.6" H (20.3 cm x 19.3 cm).
