Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE.  A standing terracotta female figure, nude except for earrings, a caplike headdress, and 'beaded' armbands.  She bears telltale traits of ancient West Mexican ceramic figures such as an elongated and enlarged head, attenuated limbs, and an expressive countenance featuring almond-shaped eyes, gracefully arched brows, a long, straight protruding nose with exaggerated septum, nicely modulated facial planes and contours, and a subtle smile that in this case reveals incised teeth that were painted with white slip. While many early collectors overlooked the figural work of Jalisco, others including famed Mexican modernist Diego Rivera appreciated the lively aesthetic of this indigenous culture.  A wonderful example with a nice burnished patina! Size: 7.125" W x 10.5" H (18.1 cm x 26.7 cm)
