Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hollow-built pottery male shaman figure seated nude with outstretched legs drawing attention to his petite phallus. He holds both hands up to his massive chin, teeth grimacing and eyes drooping, and with several raised cicatrice nodules dotting his shoulders. A horn rising from his headdress suggests his role as a shaman, so his facial expression may be caused by the beginnings of a hallucinogenic trance. Size: 9" L x 9.375" W x 16" H (22.9 cm x 23.8 cm x 40.6 cm)

Provenance: private Littleton, Colorado, USA collection; ex-John R. Anderson collection, Kansas, USA, acquired before 1986
