Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A fabulous pottery figure of a seated male shaman holding a conch shell in one hand and a petite bowl in the other. Crowned by a hood-like cap or coiffure, his large head displays a hypnotic countenance with wide-open eyes, a narrow nose, and gritted teeth, all enveloped in pale beige slip with black-painted details. He wears only a loincloth over his erect phallus while armbands and a necklace adorn his thick body. The conch shell was especially important in Pre-Columbian Mexico as it was associated with the wind god and the sound from a conch shell trumpet would mark special ceremonies and community events. Size: 6.8" L x 8.5" W x 12.8" H (17.3 cm x 21.6 cm x 32.5 cm)
