Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An intriguing anthropomorphic figure, hollow-built from terracotta, depicting a seated figure with a severely hunched back. The figure sits with bent legs and the elbows resting across the knees, the head leaning forward and the prominent spine clearly displayed. The figure is adorned with a headdress, nose ring, and applied armbands and has the characteristic coffee-bean-shaped eyes of figures from this culture. It also holds a bag slung over one shoulder. Hunchbacks make frequent appearances in the art of the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico, as they were thought of as powerful, shamanic figures. Size: 5.5" W x 8" H (14 cm x 20.3 cm)
