Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built effigy in the form of an emaciated dog, standing upon thick legs, that have protruding hip / joint sockets where the limbs meet the hollow body. The dog's ribs and spine are prominent, and this exaggerated thinness seems in direct contradiction to the usual place of such animals in the tombs of ancient Mexico, where they were meant to serve as food and companions. This less than plump offering seems to be saying that he would not make a very filling meal - but would be an excellent guardian - alert with perked ears and upturned tail. We should reassure him that he is much too charming to eat anyway. Size: 8" L x 3.75" W x 4.5" H (20.3 cm x 9.5 cm x 11.4 cm)
