Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Twice the Party Animal!

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A sweet bi-chrome pottery olla on four legs, each pair belonging to one of the pendant deer effigies emerging from each end of the vessel. Each deer is sweetly detailed with applied round eyes, pointy ears with traces or red stripes, and a protruding snout. The upper section of the vessel features a lovely geometric pattern in red on the neutral ground. A rare depiction of a double deer effigy piece from this ancient West Mexican shaft tomb culture. Size: 5.875" L x 3.25" H (14.9 cm x 8.3 cm)

We know that deer were a highly valued food sources in ancient Mesoamerica; for example, artwork from West Mexico shows military officers serving deer and peyote to ancestral deities. Adding to the iconographic meaning of this piece, the fact that we see a pair of deer heads on this vessel is indicative of the concept of dualism that is so deeply rooted in Pre-Columbian cultural traditions. Pairs of entities reflect the fundamental understanding of the continuum between life and death, male and female, sun and moon, left and right, day and night, peaks and valleys . . . central complementary ideologies that determined the religious beliefs and practices of ancient societies of the Americas.
