Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A polychrome female shaft tomb figure striking a classic seated pose with her right leg folded beneath her left, holding a bowl upon her right shoulder and her left hand out before her. A fabulous example, adeptly painted with red, white, and black slip, with nice manganese deposits and root marks on the surface. Size: 8.25" W x 10.875" H (21 cm x 27.6 cm)

The figure presents a characteristically enlarged head with an expressive visage comprised of wide open eyes, a protruding nose, and a toothy grin. Though topless with exposed pendulous breasts, she does wear a red, black, and white striped skirt and her chest is adorned with vertical red on white striations indicative of tattoos or body paint. In addition, she is highly decorated with ear ornaments, a nose ring, multiple bands on her left upper arm, and facial tattoos.
