Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A pair of pottery seated female figures, each displaying a characteristic Jalisco "sheepface" with a projecting nose and pointed ears and enveloped in vibrant red slip with white-painted details and ornamentation. Both wearing skirts, their bodies are traditionally depicted with perky breasts, wide torsos, and elongated heads crowned by banded headdresses. The shorter figure hunches slightly forward and holds a bowl before her abdomen, while the taller grasps a 2-part clapper like instrument - similar to a large castanet. A lovely pair from the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition that complement one another quite well! Size of largest: 5.3" W x 10.2" H (13.5 cm x 25.9 cm)
