Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, San Juanito style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A bichrome, hollow-molded pottery seated female shaft tomb figure painted in red and cream with a characteristic elongated face adorned with a tall headdress, her noble visage comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, a pronounced aquiline nose, and a slit-mouth presenting a subtle smile. Nude except for her feather-patterned earrings, sash or possibly skirt/huipil on her lower half, and headdress. Size: 5.5" W x 8" H (14 cm x 20.3 cm)

Note that this figure's unnaturalistic body proportions - with short arms, long head, large torso, and perky breasts positioned just beneath her armpits were not meant to indicate deformities, but rather were accepted stylistic conventions intended to emphasize female fertility, a state also suggested by her slightly protruding, perhaps preganant belly.

Provenance: Ex-Private LA County collection acquired in the 1980's
